How often do employers actually call references?

Alma Twomey: Not to worry. Been there on both sides. I can only ask if you have worked at the position stated on your application and the dates. That is it legally. There have been lawsuits about bad references that prevent anyone getting a job. I hire on a good interview. I can tell if you can work for me. Here is a flip side. I interviewed as a manager for a corporate business that checked me out "large time". Human resources came back and told me they never had such great references. Got the job with a company that was less than expected.Don't worry about it....Show more

Filiberto Ranalli: This Site Might Help You.RE:How often do employers actually call references?Hi all,I have turned in an application for a job. Since I don't have many people I can use for references, I put someone on there I haven't talked to in a while just to fill in the "references" space. I know they will give me a good reference, I just have to call them and ask......Show more

Dee Depung: The company I work for calls after the interview. Good luck!

Truman Biby: Depends on the employer. Most at least verify employment, and many call references as well. They usually call after the interview, when they are pretty sure that they want you to work for them.

Raul Lushbaugh: They call references about 75% of the time and they only call after the interview and it proves to be promising. Good luck with your job.

Hipolito Rightmire: As far as I know, only one employer has called a reference--he only called one of them as opposed to all three. I was lucky because even though I didn't have a chance to let him know, apparently I was given such an enthusiastic reference that I was hired. You never know, though as to when an employer will call. They might do it if you're a borderline candidate or to do a background check. Better be safe than sorry. Reminds me of a situation at my old high school--my history teacher was a reference for a ! Spanish teacher 15 years prior--and she was the Spanish teache! r's only reference. It's polite to give your reference a heads up so they aren't caught unawares. It's also polite to drop them a thank you note either by mail or email, to let them know if you got the job and to thank them for being a reference.Good luck!...Show more
