Aircraft Maintenance or Avionics?

Jon Bergmeier: Unless you just have a thing for engines I'd say avionics is a better career choice. You're still working on aircraft but you're fixing electronic components and wiring. Usually a little cleaner, a little more brain than brawn, and a little wider application for your skills out in the civilian world. Not that there's anything wrong with either choice, but if I could take avionics today or wait and not know for sure when the other would be open, I'd take avionics.

Bud Espenshade: if you like to get down and dirty, i mean dirty, than aircraft maintenance is for you, if not then go the avionics route. they take care of all the computers on an aircraft and when something goes wrong with avionics equipment you mostly swap out black boxes and they go to the back shop for repair. you can maybe reprogram a computer on the plane but you can't open it up and try to fix in on the plane. another thing, an avionics technician in the civilian world makes a lot more! money...Show more
