Ervin Laeger: I've owned a tivo for many years and it doesn't connect to your internet. All it needs is a landline so it can call up the service and download all the new info each day. It does this at 4am. The service fee pays for the guide and information that you get everyday to be able to use the machine. I feel that the fee is ridiculous tho.

Alonso Crehan: it is also possible to download the initial data using your parents' phone, then move the tivo to your internet connection.
